Black Filmmakers Spotlight

Every Friday at 7 PM

To celebrate Black History Month, each Friday evening we’ll be spotlighting a Black Canadian filmmaker and one of their recent award-winning films (except for the 13th which we’ve reserved for a 10th anniversary screening of the beautiful Moonlight). The screening series will feature Q&As, panel discussion, and more.

Screenings take place at Sudbury Indie Cinema- 162 Mackenzie St. Laneway/side entrance. Free parking and bike racks!

The film explores the deep roots of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the game, dating back to 1865 and the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes (CHL), the first all-pro league, which not only introduced the slapshot but shaped the game of hockey we know today. Black Ice masterfully navigates the challenges, triumphs, and unique experiences faced by these athletes through poignant firsthand accounts from hockey players past and present, including Willie O’Ree, Akim Aliu, and Wayne Simmonds.
